Looking for volunteer Authors for Basic Books on Life Sciences
Prof. Roy McWeeny, Member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science (http://www.iaqms.org) and Emeritus Professor in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Pisa, has dedicated many years of voluntary work to developing a series of Basic Books in Science that are freely available via the Internet to users around the world, having in mind particularly the needs of those who live in places where access to quality sources for learning is difficult or impossible. Information about this effort is available at http://www.learndev.org/ScienceWorkBooks.html. The same Website also provides access to the books that have already been written. They cover areas of physics and mathematics. Volumes are topical and start ‘from first principles.’ A volume on the earth sciences, authored by Prof. Chris King of Keele University, is currently under completion. All this work is done entirely on a voluntary basis in the spirit expressed by UNESCO’s Forum on the Impact of Open Courseware for Higher Education in Developing Countries (http://portal.unesco.org/ci/en/ev.php-URL_ID=2492&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html).
We are currently looking for one or more authors who are willing, on the same basis, to dedicate a portion of their time to writing one or more of the prospective volumes, or other ones to be suggested by them, on the life sciences.
If you know of such people, please bring this note to their attention. If you are yourself willing to participate in this effort, please write to the series editor, Roy McWeeny, at mcweeny@dcci.unipi.it with a copy to me at jvisser@learndev.org.
I appreciate your kind attention.
